12.16 Symposium on the Middle East “Analyzing Great Power-led Connectivity Strategies in the Middle East/Eurasia: The Actual State of the International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) with Cooperation from Russia, Iran, India, etc.”
On Monday December 16, 2024, a symposium titled “Analyzing Great Power-led Connectivity Strategies in the Middle East/Eurasia: The Actual State of the International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) with Cooperation from Russia, Iran, India, etc.” was held at Hotel Grand Arc Hanzomon, and approximately 100 people participated in the event.
In the beginning, Akitaka Saiki, President of the Middle East Institute of Japan (MEIJ), delivered his opening remarks and explained the purpose of the symposium.
With a focus on the case of the INSTC, the background and ideas behind each country’s connectivity strategy in the Middle East/Eurasia were discussed by Visiting Associate Professor Ryohei Kasai of Gifu Women’s University, Senior Researcher Mizuki Chuman of Japan Business Association ROTOBO, Professor Hisae Nakanishi of Doshisha University, Executive Research Fellow Kenta Aoki of the MEIJ. They spoke from the perspectives of India, Russia, Iran, and Eurasia respectively.
The panel discussion that followed was moderated by Executive Research Fellow Kenta Aoki of the MEIJ, and featured a discussion by four panelists, including the discussant, Professor Yoko Hirose of the Keio University.
Finally, Mikio Sasaki, Chairman of the MEIJ, gave closing remarks.
This symposium provided a valuable opportunity for a multifaceted discussion of the background to the intersection of various connectivity projects led by major powers in the Middle East/Eurasia and the impact of trends in the INSTC on regional and international affairs, as well as a lively exchange of views with the participants.
