10.24 Symposium on the Middle East “What is Happening in the Middle East Today?: Seeking Regional Security under Great Power Competition”
On Thursday October 24, 2024, a symposium titled “What is Happening in the Middle East Today?: Seeking Regional Security under Great Power Competition” was held at Hotel Grand Arc Hanzomon, and approximately 130 people participated in the event.
In the beginning, Akitaka Saiki, President of the Middle East Institute of Japan (MEIJ), delivered his opening remarks and explained the purpose of the symposium.
Following the opening remarks, what is happening in the Middle East today and how regional security in the Middle East can be achieved were discussed by Associate Professor Masaki Mizobuchi of Meiji Gakuin University, Professor Emi Mifune of Komazawa University, Executive Research Fellow Kenichiro Takao of the MEIJ, Senior Research Fellow Mayu Kaneko, and Senior Research Fellow Masahide Takahashi. They spoke from the perspectives of the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and energy respectively.
The panel discussion that followed was moderated by Executive Research Fellow Kenta Aoki of the MEIJ, and featured a discussion by five panelists, including the discussant, Associate Professor Ryo Sahashi of the University of Tokyo.
Finally, Mikio Sasaki, Chairman of the MEIJ, gave closing remarks.
This symposium was a valuable opportunity for the participants to gain an understanding of the current situation in the Middle East and to discuss various security issues facing the region from a variety of perspectives, and to engage in a lively exchange of views with other participants, as the external actors’ foreign policy, represented by the United States and China, undergoes major changes and countries in the region diversify their foreign policy.
